An affiliate program is a work relationship between a merchant and an affiliate marketer, where the affiliate marketer is credited for links from her website to the merchant’s site. The affiliate program provides the sales tracking capability and the reporting of the sales for each affiliate marketer who has joined to work within the affiliate program.
The affiliate marketers are often known as publishers, as they usually have their own websites where they place the products and/or promotional offers of the merchants in the form of affiliate links or other media (such as banner images) also with affiliate links. Usually tracking parameters and ID values must be included in all the affiliate links for the credit tracking to work. For example, the publisher ID identifies who the affiliate marketer is, the merchant ID identifies the merchant, and the product ID tells you exactly which merchant’s product is promoted.
An affiliate network has a larger scope. A specific affiliate network always consists of many merchants where affiliate marketers who have joined the affiliate network can choose her preferred merchants to work with. The choice of who works with who isn’t only from the affiliate marketers but the merchants can also have the options to accept or reject working with certain affiliate marketers.
Whether it is affiliate network or affiliate program, the most typical paying model in affiliate marketing is cost per sale (CPS). In some cases, it can be cost per lead (CPL).
